Principle 05

Say It. Do It.

“Plan it well so chances of success are high. I am the wall.”

The goalkeeper has one job: be the wall. When the ball comes, it doesn’t get past. Not “usually.” Not “most of the time.” Not “when the conditions are right.” It simply doesn’t get past. That’s the trade. That’s why people trust the keeper. Every team, and every great career, is built on people who decided, one day, to be the wall.

“Say it. Do it.” is the shortest possible description of trust. If you said you’d ship it Friday, it ships Friday. If you said you’d call the client, the client gets the call. The world is full of people who talk about what they’re going to do. There are very few who just quietly get it done. Be one of those few.

Your word is your brand. Every time you keep it, you make a small deposit. Every time you break it, the whole account empties.

This is also why planning matters. Over-promising isn’t optimism. It’s a slow way of breaking trust. The keeper doesn’t dive for every ball. They read the game, position themselves well, and make the save look easy. Plan well enough that doing it isn’t a heroic act. It’s just what happens next.

In practice
  • Before you commit, pause. Can you actually do this? By when? Don't say yes to be liked
  • If something's going to slip, say so *early*, not the day it was due
  • Write it down. A commitment you can't remember isn't one you'll keep
  • When you finish, close the loop. Tell the person who was waiting. "Done" is part of the commitment
