Help Everyone Have Work-Life Balance
“Health and family are as important as career.”
Ask any retired professional at seventy or eighty what they’re most proud of. Almost nobody says “the quarter we hit numbers in 2012.” They talk about their kids. Their health. A friend they were there for. A parent they got to say goodbye to. The score card of a life is different from the score card of a year.
A career is a marathon, not a sprint. I have seen the pattern too many times. The person who skipped every break, worked every weekend, and missed every family dinner burns out, leaves, or simply stops growing. Meanwhile, the steady one who went home on time and came back fresh kept going for thirty years. Guess who ended up with the better career?
You cannot pour from an empty cup. The people who count on you need you whole, not just present.
This principle isn’t just about me. It’s about the person next to me. If I notice someone burning out, I say something. I cover for them if I can. I send them home if they need it. Balance doesn’t come from a policy. It comes from people looking out for each other.
- Log off on time. Let the people around you see you doing it so they feel safe doing it too
- Take your holidays. Unused leave isn't loyalty. It's a slow tax on your wellbeing
- Protect time for exercise, meals, sleep. These aren't indulgences. They're infrastructure
- If a family emergency comes up, go. The work will be here when you return
