Principle 10

Quality is Non-Negotiable

“Dot every i and cross every t.”

Quality is a crown, and crowns don’t come in halves. You either wear it, or you don’t. A report with one sloppy number. A product with one broken screen. An email with one wrong attachment. Each small thing tells the person on the other side everything they need to know about the person or the team that sent it.

Here’s the quiet truth about great work: it almost never comes from great talent. It comes from great attention. The people who produce excellent work aren’t necessarily cleverer. They just refuse to hit “send” until everything is right. They re-read. They re-check. They ask one more question. While everyone else is rushing to finish, they’re finishing well.

Care about the details, and the big things take care of themselves.

This principle is also the most generous one on the list. When you deliver quality, you make someone else’s life easier: the client who doesn’t have to follow up, the teammate who doesn’t have to fix it, the future-you who doesn’t have to apologise. Quality is a kindness disguised as a standard.

In practice
  • Before sending anything, read it once more as if you were receiving it
  • Test your work. Click the buttons. Check the numbers. Re-read the sentence
  • Don't let "it'll probably be fine" be your final check. Make it "I'm sure it's right"
  • When you catch an error, fix the root cause, not just this instance
