Why AI is an opportunity for India

A deeper look at how AI can accelerate India’s development through talent, productivity and new opportunities.

The real question is not whether AI will take jobs, but whether India will use the productivity shock to create a larger economic opportunity.

India stands at a rare moment in history. AI can reshape global competition, but it can also help India solve one of its most persistent development challenges: how to spread capable talent across more of the economy.

1. A unique window

India’s most mature white collar sectors have strong processes, trained talent and large global markets. Those same characteristics make them unusually exposed to AI.

The instinct is to protect the jobs. The alternative is to ask whether India can use automation to become dramatically more competitive and allow scarce human capability to move into sectors that still need it.

That second order effect is the core of this research project.

2. The question behind the thesis

AI does not guarantee productive redeployment. People can become unemployed, wages can fall and gains can concentrate. So the important question is not whether automation happens. It is whether India can create the conditions in which productivity and talent movement reinforce each other.

This project will test that question piece by piece rather than assume the answer.
